Growing Connections
With transit ridership up, DART's expanded rail system will arrive right on time. Mirroring a national trend, DART ridership has jumped dramatically throughout the spring and summer, shattering local records with 10.3 million passenger trips in June. And with the price of gas not expected to flag anytime soon, the agency is working to manage the steady influx of people - and cars - to its bus and rail facilities while advancing one of the largest light rail expansion projects in the country. Recently, the American Public Transportation Association announced that Americans took almost 85 million more trips on public transit during the first three months of 2008 compared to the same period last year. In a separate announcement, the Federal Highway Administration said that the number of miles driven on American roads - a figure that had risen every year since 1980 - actually fell in 2007, and is continuing to drop this year. There's little doubt that "pain at the pumps" is changing the way Americans get around, and here in North Texas, commuters are turning to DART for relief. In June, ridership on DART Rail and the Trinity Railway Express (TRE) commuter line between Dallas and Fort Worth was up 14.2% and 19.8%, respectively over the same period last year. System-wide, DART's June ridership was up a whopping 20.1% over June 2007. Return to the Inmotion front page |
