We're Going Green
A letter from the DART Chairman of the Board.

Growth Spurt
The seeds of change have been sown. Now comes the real work of growing the 45-mile DART Rail System to more than twice its size, starting with the Green Line.

Keeping the Lines Open
As rail construction begins, DART is ramping up its safety education and public outreach programs to help keep resident families, schools and business owners in the know.

Winning Combination
World-class modern architecture, inviting public spaces and dramatic streetscapes make Victory Park a slam dunk and the epicenter of the real estate boom at Victory Station on the Green Line.

Two-Wheelin' Time
Fall is the perfect time to add some exercise to your daily commute and pedal your trusty two-wheeler from home to the nearest rail station or bus stop.

Short Trips
Baylor employees get a healthy commute; PassPlus brings transit home; DART Police rev up with Hemis; thousands enjoy Free Fare Day; Mavericks give ridership a bounce; passengers go green.

10 Great Years
North Texans cheered the past and hailed the future as DART celebrated the 10th anniversary of DART Rail with special events up and down the rail lines.

Short Trips

Just for fun
Athletes and nature lovers can ride DART on their favorite urban cycling adventures. White Rock Station on the Blue Line overlooks the region's largest hike and bike trail system — the 7.5-mile White Rock Creek Trail and the 12-mile White Rock Lake Park Trail. Here are some other DART-accessible hike-and-bike trails:

  • Bachman Lake Trail, 3 miles — Take Bus Routes 44 and 428

  • Galatyn Woodland Preserve and Spring Creek Nature Area trails, 2.4 miles — Take DART Rail to Galatyn Park Station

  • Glendale Park Trail, 1.7 miles — Take DART Rail to Ledbetter Station

  • L.B. Houston Trail, 4 miles — Take DART Rail to Park Lane Station, then transfer to Bus Route 428 to North Irving Transit Center

  • John C. Phelps Park Trail, 1.3 miles — Take DART Rail to Kiest Station, then transfer to Route 405

  • Katy Trail, 4 miles — Take DART Rail to the West End or Mockingbird stations

  • Kiest Park Trail, 2.4 miles — Take DART Rail to Tyler/Vernon Station, then transfer to Route 21
When completed in 2010, DART's new Green Line will provide connections to the City of Dallas' planned Santa Fe Trail that will extend from Fair Park to the White Rock Lake Park Trail.

Who Says There's No Such Thing?
TRE Medical/Market Center Station imageJuly 18 was a transit "free for all" as DART joined other North Texas transit agencies in waiving ticket and pass requirements for the day. The first-ever North Texas Free Fare Transit Day was a joint effort of DART, the North Texas Clean Air Coalition, the Denton County Transportation Authority and the Fort Worth Transportation Authority. DART ridership increased by 12,515 trips systemwide on the free day, and the customer information center reported a 52% increase in call volume. The biggest surprise was on the Trinity Railway Express where ridership topped 17,000 - 90% more than an average weekday. Regardless of the mode, regular rush-hour commuters found themselves sharing the ride with families and groups out for a day of adventures ranging from the Dallas Zoo to picnics. With the temperature above the century mark, many riders opted for the relative chill of museums, malls and other indoor diversions.

Take DART And Call Me In The Morning
Baylor University Medical Center has a new prescription for getting employees to work on time, relaxed and ready to start the day: a money-saving DART Annual Pass.

Image of Baylor University Medical CenterNow, for just $40 per employee per year, nearly 6,000 workers at Baylor's main campus on Gaston Avenue and corporate offices in downtown's Bryan Tower can enjoy unlimited rides on DART trains and buses — all year long. That's a $610 savings over DART's regular local fares!

"The ability to offer excellent benefits to our employees is important to us," says Baylor Human Resources Director Wendie Carlson. "We're very excited about working with DART."

With five other area health care organizations offering the DART Annual Pass as a recruitment incentive, Ms. Carlson said Baylor hopped on board the program to remain competitive. An internal marketing message says it all: "Baylor and DART: Another reason why Baylor is the best place to work and care for patients."

And It's Got A Hemi!
DART Police Dodge ChargerTelevision's rambunctious Duke boys may have driven circles around Hazard County's sheriff's deputies in the Dodge Charger they dubbed "The General Lee," but they had nothing on today's DART Police. The department recently replaced nine Ford Crown Victorias with 2006 versions of the Dodge Charger — and every one's got a Hemi! In fact, the citified high-performance patrol cars are so fast, officers have to qualify on a test course before they hit the streets. Unlike the General Lee, the new DART Chargers sport doors that actually open so officers don't have to climb through the windows. But, Police Captain Edward Golden says they do have one thing in common with their famous TV relative: "They will fly," he says.

Mavs Fans at Victory Station imageRidership Bounce
DART Rail ridership got a strong basketball bounce in April and May as the Dallas Mavericks pushed all the way to the NBA Finals. Average weekend ridership for the eight months ending May 31 was up 25.6% on Saturday and 15.4% on Sunday.

Lap up the luxury
Palomar Hotel imageA poorly aging 1960s-era hotel has been transformed into Dallas' newest bastion of opulence. The four-star Palomar Hotel, operated by San Francisco's exclusive Kimpton Hotels, opened in September and is the centerpiece of a $90-million development directly across Mockingbird Lane from DART's Mockingbird Station. In addition to the Palomar, which incorporates the original hotel tower, the project includes condominiums, private villas and lofts, as well as retail. The development is being billed as a "luxury urban resort," and it will feature a spa, restaurants and the resurrection of Trader Vic's in its original space. The complex is also right on the path of a planned future expansion of the Katy Trail to Mockingbird Station.

Quick Recycle Bin image
Ride Green With DART
Turn that newspaper into yesterday's news by recycling it today in bins at participating rail stations and transit centers. You may not make the headlines for helping, but at least you'll konw you made a difference. Now that's a nice story.

Passes With A Plus
October Pass imageDART's new Monthly Pass Plus program puts a DART Pass directly into every employee's home mailbox. And participating employers get helpful monthly reports documenting their participation for great tax breaks. Businesses recently taking advantage of this great employee benefit include New York Life, Hughes & Luce LLP, Univision 23 and Renaissance Hotel-Richardson. For more information about DART's family of money-saving employer pass programs, call 214-749-2724 or go to www.DART.org.
