International Metro Rail Industry Honors DART

We're Tops in the Americas!

What do DART, the London Underground and Singapore's SMRT have in common?

All three were tops in public transit for 2008.
DART was honored as "Best Metro Americas" - the premier transit system in North, Central and South America - at this spring's MetroRail 2009 Conference in London. In fact, DART surpassed the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and the Chicago Transit Authority - all of which were finalists for the prestigious award conveyed by the international Metro Rail industry.

"This is a real tribute to the customer-focused and highly dedicated employees working at every level of our organization. Together, we're developing a model transit system in America's fastest-growing metropolitan area."

– DART President/Executive Director Gary Thomas

"It's gratifying to see DART singled out for its achievements on the international stage," says DART President/Executive Director Gary Thomas, a speaker at the conference. "This is a real tribute to the customer-focused and highly dedicated employees working at every level of our organization. Together, we're developing a model transit system in America's fastest-growing metropolitan area."

DART President/Executive Director Gary Thomas accepted the "Best Metro Americas" award in London.
"The Metros" awards drew more than 250 executives representing 70 transit systems and companies from 40 countries to a gala at London's Jumeirah Carlton Tower. Judged by a distinguished panel of transport industry officials and business news correspondents representing the BBC News, Financial Times and Metro Report, the awards recognize individuals, teams and transit systems demonstrating success through innovation, creativity and pioneering in the global metro rail industry.

In addition to naming DART "Best Metro Americas," the judges tapped the London Underground as "Best Metro Europe," and SMRT, Singapore's public transport service provider, as "Best Metro Asia-Pacific."

The 2009 "Best Metro Americas" award
honors DART for:

  • Achieving record ridership and a 94-percent customer satisfaction rating in 2008 – while simultaneously launching a $3.4-billion light rail expansion program,
  • Demonstrating a high commitment to customer service, access, safety and comfort through enhanced police visibility, new level-boarding platforms and light rail vehicles, amenities enhancements, and a community-based station art and design program
  • Investing nearly $25 million over the past decade to reduce its emissions 68 percent, and
  • Facilitating nearly $8 billion in existing, planned and projected transit-oriented developments positioning a mix of residential, office, retail, entertainment and recreational lifestyle options around current and future light rail stations.
