Flexing with the times
A letter from the DART Chairman of the Board.

Managing the Surge
Record ridership is prompting service and parking initiatives to ensure transit riders, both old and new, keep coming back to DART.

Ready for Blast Off
The Green Line is in "countdown" mode for a September 2009 opening with initial service to Deep Ellum, Baylor Medical Center and Fair Park.

New City on the Rise
A new "city" is rising at Park Lane and Central Expressway boasting live-work-play options to the max and great transit connections.

Carpool City
High gas prices and the doubling of high occupancy vehicle lanes have pushed ridesharing to record levels, and we're making room for more.

Honoring Courage
The legacy of Rosa Parks will be memorialized in a new DART transit facility providing an oasis of comfort in downtown Dallas.

Short Trips
Customers enjoy the ride; DART celebrates 25 years of connections; State Fair Shuttle rides into history; British broadcasters talk to commuters; TRE adds service.

Enjoying the ride

Image: DART bus ridersAn impressive 94% of DART customers are satisfied with DART and 96% would recommend DART to others, according to a Customer Satisfaction Survey conducted in August.

The general satisfaction rate is up from 91% in 2007, while 87% of respondents said DART is doing better than last year. The agency also gets high marks for on-time service, cleanliness and communications. Additionally, the agency’s efforts to improve safety and security – including hiring more police officers and increasing their visibility on the DART System – have paid off: On all seven of the criteria measuring DART in this area, customers rated the agency higher than last year.

Being responsive to customers' needs is important, as the percentage of discretionary riders – those who own a vehicle but choose transit – has increased from 64% to 74%. Among new riders, 76% say their decision to ride DART is based on high gas prices. DART is giving people choices, and more and more of them are taking advantage of it. They're enjoying the ride, too.

Complete survey results can be found at www.dart.org.

drives into history

DART's annual State Fair Shuttle headed to the garage in October after carrying more than 55,000 people. The 2008 shuttle was the last because the 2009 State Fair will feature DART's inaugural Green Line service to the front gates of Fair Park – the first time there's been rail service to the fair in 50 years. DART operated bus shuttles to the fair from Cityplace and Pearl stations beginning in 1998, and ridership grew steadily during the decade. More than 285,000 people rode the shuttles since 2002 when the Red and Blue rail lines were completed.

BBC talks DART

Parker Road Station became a broadcast studio in September for The British Broadcasting Corporation's (BBC) 36-day, coast-to-coast "Talking America" series. It was part of their coverage of the 2008 presidential election and they made the trip in a custom motorcoach. During the morning stop in Plano, host Ros Atkins interviewed DART President/Executive Director Gary Thomas and talked to commuters about the election in general and the need for public transit in the United States.

DART celebrates 25 years

Image: President/Executive Director Gary Thomas and Board Chairman Randall ChrismanDART customers arriving at Union Station on August 13 were served cake by President/Executive Director Gary Thomas and Board Chairman Randall Chrisman as the agency celebrated 25 years of connecting communities. Thanks to generous sponsors, we threw a party throughout the week and kept people moving. Dunkin' Donuts served more than 5,000 Munchkin donut holes and 2,900 cups of coffee, McDonald's offered iced coffee, and VitaminWater passed out bottled water at rail stations and park and ride facilities. In addition, the Dallas Zoo offered two-for-one admission with a DART pass.

Ridership growth on the popular Trinity Railway Express (TRE) has prompted the addition of more trains between Dallas and Fort Worth. The commuter rail line has added one weekday eastbound run, three weekday westbound runs, and one Saturday westbound run. Go to www.trinityrailwayexpress.org for more information.
