Going Greener All the Time
Businesses across America are hopping on the "green" bandwagon these days, but DART riders have been going green — and greener — for nearly 25 years.
For starters, each of our sleek electric trains has the emissions of a golf cart — which is like next to nothing. We've cut bus emissions by 68% over the past decade, and we'll be running about 90% cleaner in 2010 when we begin taking delivery of 537 advanced technology buses.
Our newly expanded 75-mile HOV lane network reduces pollutant emissions by more than 5,000 lbs. every weekday. And when the 28-mile Green Line opens beginning in 2009, it will help reduce tons of smog-causing vehicle emissions - more than 350 tons annually by 2025.
When you hop on DART, you're going green and saving a little as well. Compared to your car, a bus uses 8.7% less energy per passenger mile, a train up to 23.7% less. What's more, the American Public Transit Association estimates that a household using public transit saves more than $6,200 every year. That's more than the average American family spends on food in a year - and it's a nice chunk of change you can use to start greening up the rest of your lifestyle.
