Planet Shark: Predator or Prey Exhibition, November 3, 2011-September 16, 2012

Planet Shark: Predator or Prey Exhibition

From "Jaws" to the Discovery Channel's "Shark Week," these oceanic predators have captured the public's fascination.

Now you can feed that curiosity at Planet Shark: Predator or Prey, an exhibition at the Museum of Nature & Science in Fair Park through September 16, 2012.

SCHOOL FOR LAND SHARKS

Planet Shark is an out-of-water exhibition that plunges into the murky myths that have surrounded sharks for centuries. The displays cover nearly every aspect of this fearsome creature – from its evolution and biology to popular culture and threats of extinction. You'll gain a new understanding of the plight of these feared predators as well as the role that sharks play in maintaining the health of marine ecosystems.

Dive into full-scale replicas, the largest of which was cast from a record-setting 18-foot Great White caught off Streaky Bay in South Australia in 1990. Then examine entire sharks that had been fossilized in ice, real teeth and jaws, and rows of fossilized sharks' teeth, some nearly 400 million years old.

Learn why sharks attack humans and see objects that have been bitten, including surfboards, wet suits, and swimming fins. Plus, view stunning photos from actual attacks and watch interviews with real-life survivors.

And, no shark exhibit would be complete without a firsthand glimpse of artifacts and memorabilia from the original 1975 edition of "Jaws," including one of the mechanical monsters used during filming.

BELOW THE SURFACE

Enhance the underwater wonder by combining the Planet Shark exhibit with the intriguing IMAX® film, SHARKS.

Presented by legendary marine biologist Jean-Michel Cousteau, son of ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau, the film provides a close encounter with the sea’s deadliest hunters. Experience what it's like when divers face off with these infamous predators, and get some surprising information about their watery world.

INTO THE DEEP

There is a special fee to see the Planet Shark exhibition, but it also includes general admission to the Museum. Tickets are date-and-time-specific to prevent overcrowding and give all visitors enough time to fully experience the exhibit. A limited number of walk-up tickets may be available, so purchase your tickets online in advance to guarantee your preferred date and entry time.

Ticket prices range from $5 for adult or child museum members to $18 for non-member adults. The money-saving Twin Fin deal allows you to see both the Planet Shark exhibit AND the SHARKS IMAX® movie for one low price ($10 for members to $27 for non-member adults).
