November 08, 2000 DART's newest Trinity Railway Express station
West Irving Station Grand Opening Set for Monday, November 13 DART representatives and Irving officials will celebrate the grand opening of the new West Irving Station on Monday, November 13 at 10 a.m. The newly finished Trinity Railway Express station has been in partial use since the mid-September extension of commuter rail service to Richland Hills.
Now completed, the new station has 500 parking spaces, 18 kiss-and-ride spaces, bike racks, four bus bays and pay phones on the boarding platform. The station is served by two bus routes (305 and 308) connecting it to Las Colinas and the South Irving Transit Center.
The station design details reflect the rural history of black Freedmen who settled the Bear Creek area in the mid-1800s. Stained concrete and colored pavers symbolize Bear Creek, which once flowed through the area, and limestone pavers engraved with the names of people historically linked to the community are set along the creek's shallow borders. The handrail design replicates native grasses, and banners on light poles bear images of farm machinery and other symbols of earlier times. Limestone boulders are used as benches, and an antique plow from the original community has been installed beside the parking lot walkway.
The Trinity Railway Express commuter rail service is making some minor schedule changes on the 13th. One of the changes will extend an evening train to Richland Hills. The train that presently leaves Union Station at 7 p.m. for CentrePort/DFW Airport Station will be extended to Richland Hills Station, arriving at 7:46 p.m. Trains traveling east from CentrePort/DFW Airport during off-peak hours will now depart at five minutes past the hour instead of five minutes before the hour.
