DART – Let's Go.

Transit Education. Making North Texans DART-smart!

Grade 1: Signs and Transit On The GO!

First graders are keenly aware of life -- from their bedroom, to the family table, down the street, to school, and back home. As students move out into the world, signs, safety and transportation begin to take center stage. Moving beyond their immediate environment stimulates understanding about larger systems and how to navigate their Dallas communities by understanding signs, rules and even getting familiar with DART's Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs).

Signs and Transit On The GO! features two lessons: 1) Sign Time and 2) Getting Around Town. Unit highlights include PowerPoints, a video and a DART TVM step-by-step poster.

In addition to the lessons, Signs and Transit On The GO! has five activities:

Lesson One - Sign Time

  Activity 1.1 - Sign Safety
Make word associations with visual signs -- a critical step to understanding every day safety.

Activity 1.2 - Find the Sign!
Investigate the signs around the school and community -- a great way to develop an awareness of signs and the guidance they provide. After the field trip, reinforce learning with a word-matching activity.

Lesson Two - Getting Around Town

Activity 2.1 - Is this Safe? Yes or No?
Do a visual and auditory exercise focused on safety "do's" and "don'ts."

Activity 2.2 - Pay 'n Go
Play an interactive game using a Ticket Vending Machine (TVM).

Activity 2.3 - Let's Take A Ride!
Put beans in a cup. Then, pour them into a bowl and learn about mass transit. Take an imaginary ride on a DART light rail train.

All lessons, activities and learning materials are designed to augment your existing class curriculum and align with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Activities involving mathematics align with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards. Life skills are also listed.
