TANF Cash Help Benefits and DART Passes

Texas Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program is designed to provide families with the resources and support necessary for financial stability.

Lone Star Card

TANF cash is provided so that both parents are responsible for caring for their children, regardless of which partner is the custodial caretaker. A Lone Star Card is provided by the state of Texas to families who receive TANF cash. The Lone Star Card is an Electronic Benefits Transfer card used like a debit card

DART Passes with the Lone Star Card

People who get TANF can use their Lone Star Card to purchase DART Monthly passes at reduced rates. These are standard DART passes, not Reduced Fare passes. When the card is swiped, the cashier enters the appropriate fare and issues the pass. The cost is $48 for a Local Monthly Pass and $96 for Regional Monthly Pass.

A person with TANF benefits and a Lone Star Card might not be able to buy a DART pass if:

  • The Lone Star Card account does not contain any TANF benefit funds.
  • The Lone Star Card account does not have enough TANF benefit funds.
