DART Sustainability Program

Sustainability Vision

To promote a culture of sustainability that adds value for our customers, improves quality of service, attracts tomorrow’s workforce, and positions DART as a leader in sustainability with a focus on continuous improvement.

Since forming as a public transit agency in 1983, Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) has a long history of sustainable planning, project development, as well as operations and maintenance practices. This commitment was memorialized in December 2011 when DART became a signatory to the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) Sustainability Program.

As DART carried out its mission to develop and construct its growing multi-modal system in one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country, DART's sustainable practices have evolved with industry technologies and practices. DART has frequently been an industry leader in the field of implementing sustainable practices, particularly in fuel technologies, facility waste reduction, innovative service planning, business technologies, and State of Good Repair.

DART's sustainability strategy seeks to:

  • Improve the lives of our customers
  • Instill a sense of pride and purpose for our employees
  • Reflect our financial strength and operational resiliency
  • Demonstrate a net positive impact to the environment
DART's sustainability framework is organized around three pillars - Our Community, Our Agency, and Our Planet. This framework allows DART to illustrate the many ways the Agency provides social, economic and environmental benefits to a wide range of stakeholders.

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION DIVERSITY & INCLUSION PLANNING & DESIGN
Create oppotunities for the diverse business community in our service area by providing education, outreach, and awarding contracts. Create an inclusive culture that welcomes the diverse qualities of all employees, and support efforts to attract and retain an innovative and skilled workforce. Minimize DART's impact to the natural environment and maximize benefits to the community through context-sensitive planning and design that incorporates responsive mitigation.
RIDERSHIP & SERVICE EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT SUSTAINABLE PROCUREMENT
Grow ridership by improving rider experience through reliable, inclusive, universally accessible, comfortable, and convenient transit services. Engage our people in collaborative programs to encourage professional development, recognize talent, and promote employee health and financial wellness. Collaborate with suppliers and professional service providers to identify and implement sustainable best practices and innovative solutions that create incentives for social, economic and environmental benefits.
EQUITY & ACCESS FINANCIAL STRENGTH ENERGY & AIR QUALITY
Provide fair and affordable service for all service area residents, with a focus on improved mobility and job access opportunities for transit-dependent communities. Be good stewards of public funds through responsible financial planning and investing in services, programs, and projects that deliver sustainable value to the community. Improve fuel and energy use efficiency while transitioning to cleaner fuels and renewable energy sources.
LIVABLE COMMUNITIES OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY WATER
Be a regional catalyst for vibrant places to live, work, and play. Collaborate with communities to create walkable, transit-oriented developments around transit investments. Promote a "safety-first" culture where all employees proactively collaborate to prevent accidents and injuries throughout the Agency. Improve water use efficiency through conservation, reuse, and best practices.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT OPERATIONAL RESILIENCY WASTE
Be an active member of the community, creating connections that bring people together in the communities we serve. Collaborate on plans and improvements that lead to more secure, reliable, and resilient systems, operations, and vehicles that benefit both Agency and customers. Minimize waste through durable design, preventitive maintenance, material recovery, and business practices.
SAFETY & SECURITY
Improve customers' sense of safety and security at facilities and on vehicles through improved awareness, enhanced design features, and increased visibilty.
