Area agencies urge commuters to ''Dump the Pump'' and try transit

North Texas commuters can save money on gasoline prices just by riding public transit.

That's the message Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART), The T in Fort Worth, and the Denton County Transportation Authority (DCTA) want to communicate in June during the ninth annual national Dump the Pump campaign.

The three agencies encourage commuters to try transit the week of June 16-20 and on National Dump the Pump Day, Thursday, June 19. The slogan of this year's campaign is "Dump the Pump. Save Money. Ride Transit."

DART, The T and DCTA staff will meet commuters at various locations starting June 2 and offer informational pieces, environmental facts and a list of key destinations that offer discounts for riding public transit.

A daily Regional Pass to travel in North Texas is only $10. The pass provides access to all DART, The T and DCTA bus and train services, including the Trinity Railway Express. Transit is also good for the environment. DART, The T and DCTA buses run on either clean diesel or natural gas and DART's electric light rail fleet produces zero emissions.

The national Dump the Pump campaign, sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), started in 2006 to emphasize the amount of money people can save by using transit. The campaign also calls attention to the environmental, economic and community development benefits of public transportation. This campaign is a component of an ongoing transit industry initiative, Where Public Transportation Goes Community Grows, to gain support for federal funds that would support operations and service expansion.

According to the April APTA Transit Savings Report, individuals in a two-person household can save an average of more than $10,174 annually by using transit and downsizing to one car. Previous APTA studies have pointed out the economic impact transit can have within communities. For example, more than $5.4 billion have been invested in new transit oriented development along DART's 85-mile light rail corridor.
