The Washington, D.C.-based WTS has a total of 3,500 members involved in the transportation industry in 34 chapters nationwide. The Dallas/Fort Worth chapter of WTS was established by Schafer in 1990 and has grown to 125 members. Schafer was a founding member and the first President of the Greater Dallas-Fort Worth Chapter of WTS. At East Dallas she oversees 350+ bus operators and staff. She has been employed by DART since 1988. She began her career as a social worker for the State Department of Public Welfare. She was part of the group that designed and implemented the Department's Title XIX medical transportation system in 1975. She led the rural public transportation demonstration project for the rural area surrounding Austin. She has also served as the Chief of VIATrans, the demand-responsive service for the mobility impaired operated by VIA Metropolitan Transit in San Antonio, and as the Manager of MITS, the paratransit operation of The T in Fort Worth. Others sharing the limelight in a reception Nov. 7 at the Women's Museum in Dallas' Fair Park are Rep. Kay Granger of the 12th Congressional District in Fort Worth, Donna Williams, vice president of Parsons Transportation and Donna Parker, vice president of the North Texas Commission and vice chairman of the North Texas Tollway Authority Board.
