Media Relations Contact: April 9, 2002 New Transit Center construction to start by year-end DART invites citizens to review MLK Transit Center designs Take an early look at designs for DART's future MLK Transit Center at Martin Luther King Boulevard and Trunk Avenue, Thursday, April 18 during a public meeting.
DART will start construction by year-end after the design phase is completed. The MLK Transit Center will help consolidate bus service in the South Dallas and Fair Park communities. Instead of standing outside in the elements, passengers will be able to wait in a safe, climate-controlled facility. The Transit Center will initially serve Route 44, which has one of the system's highest ridership, plus Routes 445, 12, 26 and 22. The MLK Transit Center will eventually become a light rail station as part of the Southeast Corridor. The corridor includes a 10.2-mile light rail line from Pearl Station in downtown Dallas, through Deep Ellum and past Fair Park to Buckner Terrace and Pleasant Grove. The rail alignment and placement of eight stations were approved after extensive community input, including more than 40 public meetings. -- 30 -- |
