With the grand opening of DART's LBJ/Skillman Station on May 6, DART light rail reaches another milestone by traveling beyond LBJ Freeway. From its beginning in 1996, DART light rail has steadily pushed outward, and plans call for more growth later this year.

DART's 23rd light rail station extends the Blue Line 3.5 miles from White Rock Station to serve Northeast Dallas. And on November 18, DART extends the line to the new Forest/Jupiter and Downtown Garland stations.

The LBJ/Skillman Station will be a boon to commuters, creating easy access to downtown Dallas and points west. The station has 646 free parking spaces, passenger shelters, seating and telephones. DART makes it easy to take the bus to the station with the modification of Routes 60, 374, 569 and 583, plus the debut of new routes 550, 551 and 560. See the latest DART Service Change Brochure, visit DART.org, or call DART Customer Service at 214-979-1111 for details.

Super Saturday festivities
To help celebrate LBJ/Skillman Station's opening, the public is invited to a special "Super Saturday" event, Saturday, May 4, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Entertainment, food and prizes are part of the festivities. Everyone attending the party receives a pass to ride DART free for a week and a chance to win a free 6-month pass.

DART to Art at LBJ/Skillman
Image of LBJ/Skillman Station with a test trainEvery DART Rail station has its own unique look. The LBJ/Skillman Station celebrates the natural landscape of the region and the importance of transportation to Texas and the United States. The station itself sits between the Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail line and LBJ Freeway. The North Texas region has a significant rail history and the highway is named for President Lyndon Baines Johnson of Texas, who signed the legislation creating the U.S. Department of Transportation in 1966.

President Johnson's wife, Lady Bird, made significant contributions to transportation by promoting the use of native plants, grasses and wildflowers along highways. Her role is reflected in the landscaping around the station. The rail platform's column design and windscreen art panels bring their contributions together as they symbolize the themes of transportation and natural beauty.

DART Bus Service Change May 6
DART is making changes to additional routes to improve service, balance passenger loads on popular routes and take full advantage of the new I-35E/US 67 High Occupancy Vehicle lane south of downtown Dallas. The affected routes are: 29, 31, 42, 51, 63, 205, 206, 210, 278, 475, 518 and 553. Details about the changes are available on DART.org, in the DART Service Change Brochure or by calling DART Customer Service, 214-979-1111.

DART Rail Moves North in July, December
DART is opening seven more stations July 1, including facilities at Park Lane, Walnut Hill, Forest Lane and LBJ/Central in Dallas. Three Richardson stations -- Spring Valley, Arapaho Center and Galatyn Park -- also open July 1. The Bush Turnpike Station in Richardson and two Plano stations, downtown Plano and Parker Road, are scheduled to open December 9.

About 40,000 customers ride DART light rail each weekday. The new stations in Dallas, Garland, Richardson and Plano are expected to add 27,000 new riders by 2010.
