New holiday destinations

DART shows off the Metroplex

New rail service to Garland, Richardson and Plano makes DART the best way to show visiting relatives and friends the sights and sounds of the Metroplex, including shopping, festivals, art, sporting events, restaurants, historical sites and more.

And even if you took your grandma from Groesbeck or your cousin from Cleveland on DART last year, it's worth another trip. DART Rail is bigger and covers more territory than ever.

Since last Christmas, DART has opened 13 new rail stations in Dallas, Garland, Richardson and Plano. The improved network of rail, bus and M-Line streetcar service makes it easy to reach top attractions from the Dallas Zoo to West Village, to Downtown Garland and Plano, and to Fort Worth. With commissioned art and custom landscaping, each DART rail station has its own personality. And the exciting attractions around the stations make every trip an adventure.

Riding DART only costs $2 for an all-day pass, available from ticket vending machines at all stations. It's also easy to get help planning a trip on DART. Trip planners at 214-979-1111 will give personal service, or route and schedule information is available at DART.org.

Dallas Zoo Station
A perennial favorite on one of Texas' mild winter days is a trip south on DART's Red Line to the Dallas Zoo. Passengers disembark just yards from the entrance of the zoo, which is open seven days a week during the holiday season, except for Christmas Day. Football fans in the know will ride the Cotton Bowl Flyer to the New Year's Day clash between the University of Texas and Louisiana State University. But those two destinations are only the beginning.

Downtown and Uptown Dallas
Whether visitors are staying at a plush hotel like the Crescent Court or the Adolphus, or they're houseguests in one of DART's 13 member cities, it's easy to get a train at any DART Rail station, on either the Red or Blue Line.

In the Dallas Central Business District, must-see locations include the Sixth Floor Museum and the West End entertainment district at DART's West End Station, Neiman Marcus, the grand dame of quality shopping, and the newly revitalized Main Street dining, entertainment and retail area two blocks from Akard Station.

From Union Station, visitors can walk over to the Hyatt Regency at Reunion, then ride up the 50-story Reunion Tower to take in the view from the observation deck or enjoy a meal in the Antares restaurant, as it slowly revolves for a 360-degree view of Dallas.

Another fun way to see downtown and Uptown is on the historic M-Line, a combination of DART's downtown Trolley-Bus circulator and the historic McKinney Avenue Streetcar line, which features four lovingly restored turn-of-the-century vehicles. Rides on the M-Line are free. A top destination is the new West Village at McKinney and Lemmon avenues, a transit village that combines condominium residences with upscale dining and shopping.

The streetcar, which operates daily from 7 a.m. to 9:50 p.m., hooks up with DART's downtown Trolley-Bus circulator at the intersection of St. Paul and Ross. Since the M-Line serves DART's Cityplace Station, day-trippers can do downtown on the circulator, transfer to the streetcar to tour McKinney Avenue restaurants, art galleries and boutiques, and then jump back on a modern DART light rail train at Cityplace for still more adventures.

Basketball and hockey fans will want to check out the two professional teams that call American Airlines Center home. The Dallas Mavericks and the Dallas Stars sit atop their respective leagues. It's easy to get to AAC via DART Rail and convenient shuttle-bus service, or special Trinity Railway Express trains that connect Fort Worth and Dallas.

Just a short walk from DART's St. Paul Station in downtown are the Dallas Museum of Art and the Trammell and Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art, two attractions sure to please any art lover.

From downtown Dallas, all DART trains stop at Mockingbird Station, one of the nation's most successful transit villages. There, visitors can enjoy a movie, grab lunch or dinner at the many convenient and trendy restaurants, or shop at the fashionable stores and boutiques.

Garland

When DART extended its Blue Line to Garland this fall, the merchants in the city's historic downtown district, Main Street Garland, were ready. Just two blocks from the downtown DART station, the city's old town square offers an eclectic mixture of old-time shopping and treats with an up-to-date coffee house and Internet café.

Another key entertainment venue at Downtown Garland Station is the Plaza Theater, which just got a $1.2 million facelift.

Richardson

Richardson is home of the Telecom Corridor, and the doorway to the corridor is DART's Galatyn Park Station, where a business-government consortium has invested millions in creating a unique destination. Just steps from the station is the 330-room Renaissance Dallas-Richardson Hotel, with three restaurants, a waterfall and brilliant glass sculptures adorning the atrium lobby. A short walk away is the gem of Galatyn Park, the $40-million Charles W. Eisemann Center for the Performing Arts and Corporate Presentations, which offers live theater weekends and a New Year's Eve gala.

Plano

With the arrival of DART Rail in downtown Plano this month, the city's vibrant arts scene got a lot hotter. Just two minutes from Downtown Plano Station in one direction is the Courtyard Theater. A half a block from the station in the other direction is ArtCentre of Plano, home of the award-winning Plano Repertory Theatre and the ArtCenter Theatre.

Plano's classic downtown center features specialty shops, restaurants and antique shops. Just a short walk away is historic Haggard Park, which boasts a museum of the old Interurban Line within the Interurban Station. The DART station is also the front door to Eastside Village, a transit village that is home to more than 700 people, as well as retail shops.

Fort Worth
A visit to the Metroplex isn't complete without a trip to Fort Worth. There's no better way to reach Cowtown than by taking DART Rail to Union Station and transferring to the Trinity Railway Express, for a 60-minute trip to the ITC Station in the heart of the city.

At the ITC, convenient shuttle buses are available to the many attractions in Fort Worth. Nearby in downtown is Sundance Square, a vibrant 20-block section that features trendy shopping and a hot entertainment and dining scene.

Fort Worth
Stockyards
To the north is Fort Worth's past -- the Fort Worth Stockyards. Once the center of the region's cattle-trading business, it's now an entertainment district with restaurants, shops and an authentic coal-burning locomotive.

Another must for art lovers is the internationally acclaimed Fort Worth arts district, home of the Kimbell Art Museum, the Amon Carter Museum of Western Art, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and more. Together with the beautiful Bass Performance Hall in downtown, the arts district has given Fort Worth a worldwide reputation as a cultural center.

With knowledgeable customer service representatives standing by at 214-979-1111 from early morning to late at night, and complete schedule and fare information available at DART.org anytime, it's easy to plan a trip on the Southwest's most popular and successful transit system. Featuring clean, new equipment and an expanded list of destinations, DART is a great holiday adventure.
