Media Contact: August 10, 1998 $220 Million for DART Rail projects FTA's transit chief to visit Dallas August 19 Nuria Fernandez, Deputy Administrator of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), will be in the Dallas area August 19 to discuss the recently authorized $41 billion in national transit benefits, including $220 million for DART's extension of light rail lines north to Richardson and Plano and northeast to Garland.At a luncheon hosted by the D/FW Chapter of the Women's Transportation Seminar (WTS), Fernandez will explain how funds in the recently-passed Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) will be utilized to achieve national transit goals for the next century. Fernandez leads the FTA's 170-person field staff that deals directly with America's transit agencies. Formerly Assistant General Manager for Design and Construction for the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority in Washington, D.C., she began her transportation career with the Chicago Transit Authority. The Women's Transportation Seminar (WTS) focuses on the professional development of women in transportation, with 34 chapters nationwide.
