Carrying Handguns on DART

DART works daily to maintain a safe system. We also know that many customers may want to exercise their right to carry a handgun while on our buses and trains. Consistent with state law, DART has complied with the law that allows open or concealed carry of handguns by persons with a handgun license on DART vehicles and property. Effective September 1, 2021, as approved by the state legislature, any person who is 21 years of age or older and not otherwise prohibited by state or federal law from possessing a firearm is permitted to carry a handgun concealed or open in a holster without a permit.

Holders of a valid handgun permit, and persons who are 21 years of age or older and not otherwise prohibited by state or federal law from possessing a firearm, may carry a handgun concealed or open in a holster on DART's buses and trains, including the Trinity Railway Express, Dallas Streetcar and in public areas under DART management.

Carrying on a DART Vehicle

Under the revised law, customers may carry a handgun, concealed or open, in a holster when riding DART. If a person's handgun is NOT in a holster, bus or rail operators may stop the vehicle and call DART Police. A police officer may not inquire about or investigate a person's possession of a handgun solely because the person is carrying a visible handgun in a holster. The law does allow a police officer to inquire about or investigate a person's possession if the handgun is out of the holster.

Customers carrying concealed handguns should experience no changes unless the handgun becomes visible. If that happens, the police may be called to investigate.

Where you can't Carry

The Open Meetings Act prohibits the possession of handguns in the room or rooms where a meeting of a governmental entity is held with proper signage. The new amendments have not changed this statute, so handguns are still not allowed during meetings of the DART Board of Directors. DART will post state-mandated signs to identify places where handguns may not be carried.

Additional information about the changes to the handgun carry laws in Texas is available online.
