Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) is a regional transit agency authorized under Chapter 452 of the Texas Transportation Code and was created by voters and funded with a one-cent local sales tax on August 13, 1983. The service area consists of 13 cities: Addison, Carrollton, Cockrell Hill, Dallas, Farmers Branch, Garland, Glenn Heights, Highland Park, Irving, Plano, Richardson, Rowlett, and University Park.

History

History of Dallas Area Rapid Transit from its beginning to the present.
The Dallas Transit System (DTS) was a public transit service operated by the city of Dallas from 1964 to 1983. DART was created on August 13, 1983, as a replacement for DTS and funded the expansion of the region's transit network through a sales tax levied in member cities. DART Light Rail began operation in 1996 and has grown to become the longest light rail system in the United States--at 93 miles long!

Historic Preservation

A history of the first interurban system in Texas and Monroe Shops, built in 1914, which housed the daily operations of repairing and maintaining the electric railroad cars for the Southern Traction Company and Texas Traction Company. Today, Monroe Shops is the DART Police Headquarters and the first public building on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) to receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Platinum certification.

The Impact of DART Rail on Economic Development

An examination of what is going up around DART's rail corridors.
This document aims to identify and calculate the economic impacts of real estate development projects within a quarter-mile radius of DART light-rail stations in the time period 2016-2018. The values of all projects included in the analysis were determined through a combination of steps, including the use of their estimated values as published in the sources analyzed, cross-checking the properties with the Dallas and Collin County Appraisal Districts where possible, and augmenting all information with a review by analysts at Cushman & Wakefield. IMPLAN software was used to create an economic input-output model to measure the development projects' direct, indirect, and induced impacts on the Dallas-Ft. Worth region.

TRE Facts

Trinity Railway Express Commuter Rail fact sheet.
The TRE line serves Dallas Union Station at its eastern terminus, located on the west side of downtown Dallas. DART opened the first commuter rail line in the southwestern United States. The first segment of the Trinity Railway Express follows a 10-mile rail line linking downtown's Union Station, the Medical/Market Center Station, and the South Irving Transit Center. More than 4,000 people rode the train during its first day of operation.

NEW SUPER DART RAIL VEHICLES DEBUT THIS SUMMER WITH ADDED CAPACITY AND IMPROVED ACCESS

DART is updating its fleet of 115 light rail vehicles (LRV) by inserting a new, low-floor insert between the existing sections of the vehicle adding seating capacity and improving access through level boarding. The newly modified vehicles began service on June 23, 2008 with car #151.

DART Expansion Plans

Current projects include the Silver Line, the 26-mile regional rail service that traverses three counties (Tarrant, Dallas, and Collin) and seven cities across the northern part of the DART Service Area (Grapevine, Coppell, Dallas, Carrollton, Addison, Richardson and Plano) and the D2 Subway project, the future second light rail line through downtown Dallas that extends from Victory Park to Deep Ellum.
