Staycation scoop: Featuring museums, restaurants, and turn-of-the-century buildings, this historic neighborhood has something for locals and visitors alike.
Things to do: The Museum of Illusions tricks your senses with interactive exhibits and provides plenty of photo ops. At the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum, educational programming tells the story of the Holocaust in a compelling and intimate way. Nearby, The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza provides perspective on the tragic events of November 22, 1963.
Before you’re through: The district is bursting with restaurants and bars. Favorites include RJ Mexican Cuisine, which specializes in south-of-the-border steaks, and 3Eleven Kitchen & Cocktails, which serves up modern American cuisine and artisan cocktails.
Staycation scoop: Prepare to be charmed by Irving’s historic Main Street as you glimpse into the city’s past. With quaint architecture, low-key shopping and numerous restaurants, the Irving Heritage District is the perfect place to while away an afternoon.
Things to do: Heritage House is one of Irving’s oldest homes, built in 1912 by the brother of one of the city’s founders and furnished with original family items. Centennial Park is another place to explore history, with a tree-lined walking trail, statues of Irving’s founders, and more.
Before you’re through: Make the short walk from the station to the new “Timeless” mural. Spanning more than 5,000 square feet, the mural makes a colorful tribute to Irving’s history while using concrete walls and a rail bridge as its canvas.
Staycation scoop: The Mustang Station Arts & Culture District is a mixed-use neighborhood featuring outdoor art installations, dining, shopping, the performing arts, and more.
Things to do: Hit an open skate at Children’s Health StarCenter, or check out Farmers Branch Historical Park, which features numerous 19th-century buildings, including a train depot, a school and an old church. Also, give yourself time to stop and smell The Rose Gardens of Farmers Branch!
Before you’re through: There are numerous dining options in the district, including Starwood Cafe, Red Stix, and Radici Wood Fired Grill.
Staycation scoop: There’s more to Fair Park than the State Fair of Texas. The area features year-round attractions, including several notable museums and one of the greatest concentrations of art deco buildings in the world, built for the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition.
Things to do: The African American Museum has one of the largest African American folk art collections in the country. Texas Discovery Gardens features beautiful gardens, a fantastic playscape for kids, and an enchanting butterfly house. The area is also home to Dallas Summer Musicals, which presents The Lion King through from June 4 through July 3 at the Music Hall at Fair Park.
Before you’re through: Across the street from the station, entertain yourself in the Exposition Park neighborhood. Craft & Growler has a huge selection of draft beers; Las Almas Rotas has an extensive selection of mezcal; and the Ochre House Theater stages original plays.
Staycation scoop: Mom-and-pop specialty shops and restaurants combine to create a charming neighborhood with small-town vibes. Meanwhile, the revamped town square hosts year-round events.
Things to do: The Music Made Here concert series happens the first Friday of every month, while The Urban Market takes place the second Saturday of each month. Between the Granville Arts Center and the Plaza Theatre, experience everything from ballet and concerts to movies and musicals.
Before you’re through: Don’t forget to sample some barbecue and handcrafted beer at Intrinsic Smokehouse & Brewery.
Staycation scoop: Located south of downtown Dallas, this walkable entertainment district is home to artists, galleries, bars, restaurants, and even a movie theater.
Things to do: Start at SPARK! Dallas, an immersive, hands-on creative environment for the young and young at heart. Located in the historic South Side on Lamar building, SPARK! is Dallas’ ultimate playground for creativity. Nearby, soak up some cinema at Alamo Drafthouse, or catch a show at Poor David’s Pub or the South Side Ballroom.
Before you’re through: Grab a burger and a picnic table at Lee Harvey’s; sip a pint at Four Corners Brewing; or try some of the best ‘cue in town at Off the Bone.
Staycation scoop: With nearly 40 retail and restaurant options, CityLine has a little bit of everything: restaurants, green spaces, and even public art. This cool urban hub also provides great connections to hike-and-bike trails.
Things to do: Want to take your staycation up a notch? Book a room at the Aloft Hotel and pamper yourself like you would on an “away-cation.” Even without an overnight stay, you can catch some live music at the WXYZ Lounge downstairs.
